Huascaran δO as an indicator of tropical climate during the Last Glacial Maximum

چکیده

The interpretation of the isotopic composition of Andes tropical mountain glaciers is reconsidered using a simple Rayleigh distillation model. It is shown that Andes snowline depression and Huascaran ice core δO are consistent with a 3C drop in sea surface temperature during the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by an increase from 40% at present to 60% during the LGM in the annual mean proportion of atmospheric water lost to continental runoff. Broecker’s interpretation of Huascaran δO as a paleo-hygrometer is discussed.

Late glacial stage and holocene tropical ice core records from huascaran, peru.

Two ice cores from the col of Huascarán in the north-central Andes of Peru contain a paleoclimatic history extending well into the Wisconsinan (Würm) Glacial Stage and include evidence of the Younger Dryas cool phase. Glacial stage conditions at high elevations in the tropics appear to have been as much as 8 degrees to 12 degrees C cooler than today, the atmosphere contained about 200 times as ...

Obliquity-driven expansion of North Atlantic sea ice during the last glacial

North Atlantic late Pleistocene climate (60,000 to 11,650 years ago) was characterized by abrupt and extreme millennial duration oscillations known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. However, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 23,000 to 19,000 cal years ago (23 to 19 ka), no D-O events are observed in the Greenland ice cores. Our new analysis of the Greenland δO record reveals a switch in t...

The role of ocean-atmosphere interactions in tropical cooling during the last glacial maximum

A simulation with a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model configured for the Last Glacial Maximum delivered a tropical climate that is much cooler than that produced by atmosphere-only models. The main reason is a decrease in tropical sea surface temperatures, up to 6 degrees C in the western tropical Pacific, which occurs because of two processes. The trade winds induce equatorial...

The climate of the Last Glacial Maximum: Results from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model

Results from a coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model simulation of the Last Glacial Maximum reveal annual mean continental cooling between 48 and 78C over tropical landmasses, up to 268 of cooling over the Laurentide ice sheet, and a global mean temperature depression of 4.38C. The simulation incorporates glacial ice sheets, glacial land surface, reduced sea level, 21 ka orbital pa...
